On January 30th and 31st of January 2016 TIMed opens its doors to young and talented hackers who come up with innovative ideas in the field of Health care. Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology is one of the prestigious institution in the field of Medical science and technology in the country.

Medical devices and biomaterials is a sunrise industry in India and a recession-free industry globally. With numerous unment clinical needs that require innovative solutions and a pressing need to develop affordable devices, now is the ideal time for you to engage in this sector. There are ample opportunities to innovate in the area of medical devices which include disposables, external prosthetic devices temporary and permanent implants, diagnostics, therapeutic, surgical instruments and much more.

This is an opportunity being provided to the young brains of the state who are interested in the development of medical devices to solve a problem put forward by a clinician. We want this need to be translated into a workable solution to provide this back to the health community and ultimately to the patients.

Mr C Balagopal has more than 3 decades of experience in senior leadership roles in business and Government starting his career with the Indian Administrative Services. He resigned from IAS to launch his entrepreneurial career by setting up a manufacturing unit to make innovative bio-medical devices in India, the company named Terumo Penpol.



Rajesh Nair is currently a Visiting Scholar at the MIT Tata Center and Director of the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Center at the Asia School of Business in Kuala Lumpur, a new school started by MIT Sloan school of management and Bank Negara, the central bank of Malaysia. His TechTop center offers live-in workshops on innovation, fabrication & entrepreneurship.

1.MRI compatible infusion pump

Current infusion pumps use metallic parts due to which they cannot be used in strong magnetic field of MRI ,therefore require infusion pump without any metal components.


2.Pain measuring device

To develop a impedance based pain measuring device.


3.Mobile Suction Unit

Mobile, vacuum controllable suction unit for continuous chest drainage.


4.Inline fluid warmer

Simple, cost effective online fluid warmer for infusion fluids


5.Anesthetic gas scavenger

Simple cost effective, anesthetic gas scavenger


6.Failure free pulse Oximeter

Failure free pulse oximeter with improved fastening for pediatric patients.


7.ICP, IOP and pupilary response monitor

Non-invasive continuous ICP, IOP and pupilary response monitoring through a device mounted on spectacle frame which is applied over eye.


8.Artificial speech synthesis devices

Communication device for children with diseases such as cerebral palsy with local language.


9.Hand-held CTS

Hand-held CTS (carpel tunnel syndrome) detector which detects the increased latency in median nerve in comparison to ulnar nerve.


10.Mechanical vascular compression device

A mechanical device which gives uniform pressure directly over the arterial puncture site at measurable pressure.


11.Hand held probe

Hand held probe for differentiate nerve and vein or fat and muscle during biopsy.


12.Nerve Locator

Cost effective hand held, simple nerve locator based on piezo electric principle.


13.Epileptic Seizure App

App for monitoring drug compliance and recording epileptic seizures


14.Anesthetic face mask

An improved anesthetic face mask for edentulous patients.


15.Wound healing device

A simple device for applying negative pressure on wounds to promote vacuum assisted wound healing.


16.Fogg resistant for Surgeon

Improved mask to prevent fogging of the glasses of surgeon, or improved fog free glasses for the same.


17.‘Electric pants’ to prevent bedsores

Gives electric stimulations to areas susceptible to ulcer to stimulate ‘fidgeting’ which eventually prevents ulcers


18.Illumination device

Illumination device at needle holder tip.


19.Pressure Regulator

A simple device for regulating endo-tracheal tube cuff pressure to 30cm H2O.
